Fan art: 2012-2014

By the time I started being a bit more serious about my drawing I was in my GCSEs and so my drawing skills developed fairly quickly. Now, I’m not saying at all that I’ve completely grown out of my obsessive-over-TV-and-film-characters phase but during these few years I pretty much only drew fan art when I was at home – mostly Doctor Who and Hunger Games characters but also those from Harry Potter and Once Upon A Time (if you like any of these I’m sure we could be great friends 😉 )
This post only includes the pieces I’m most proud of out of my finished drawings … I have lots more unfinished but you isn’t seein’ ’em!

From earliest -> most recent

What I want to say for this post I have already written so here is the introduction to my A Level art essay.

When we chose our focus for our ‘Personal Investigation’ I found myself steering towards portraiture. I’ve always found facial features and the structure of the human profile fascinating. One thing I always love to draw is portraits, whether it’s of a family member or a famous person. I could happily sit studying the complex construction of the human eye or likewise figuring out how to perfect a person’s lips when they all change dramatically from person to person. I started looking at artists that have worked on portraiture on Pinterest and from there explored the related posts to find more of the same.

Portraiture can sometimes make the viewer feel confronted. Others will find a common ground with the subject and sympathise with them. Any art can create connections between the different elements of the image, the artist and the viewer, however portraiture is more personal and intimate. There are lot of different factors which determine if this is a warm and comforting emotion or a jarred and unnatural bond. In this essay I will investigate how we, individually, engage with art and what attracts us to something. Do the different compositions and materials have a part to play?

For my Unit 2 fine art project I chose to explore how my Grandad’s life effected me for the best. As this project was very personal to me I became very attentive to my portraits. This theme runs through most of my art, meaning that it is accurate and realistic. I have been called a perfectionist and at times I have found it difficult to stylise my drawings and loosen them up although the art teachers at my high school helped me to develop my skills greatly by encouraging me to try different techniques.

In order of appearance:

  • Pencil drawing, A4,
  • Pencil sketch, A4,
  • Coffee painting w/ blue pencil, A4,
  • Landscape acrylic on canvas, ~100x40cm.
RRB 1 1
Going in deep. With varying degrees of pressure wrinkles are defined or can be made more subtle.
RRB 2 1
Loosening it up. With a fresh eye on a new image it was easy to change the style of the drawing, making it more sketchy and free.
RRB 3 1
Different strengths of coffee make up the depth, along with blue pencil to counterbalance the warm colour of the coffee.
RRB 4 2
The project led up to this, my final piece. In acrylic.
